Fall Fun for Kiddos on the Spectrum

Let’s be honest, fall is magical in the Twin Cities. The leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, and suddenly, everything feels cozier. But if you’re like me and have a kiddo on the spectrum, finding the right fall activities can be a bit of a puzzle. Some places are too loud, others too crowded, and the idea of getting your kiddo out there can feel overwhelming. I get it. But the good news? There are spots that are quieter, more relaxed, and better suited for our kiddos.

After doing some research (and honestly, a bit of trial and error), I’ve found some great options that keep things fun without the sensory overload. Whether you’re looking for apple orchards, pumpkin patches, or a peaceful nature walk, here are some places to check out this fall:

Apple Picking & Orchards

Afton Apple Orchard (Hastings, MN)

I love Afton Apple Orchard for those laid-back fall days. You can pick apples, check out the pumpkin patch, or hop on a hayride. What’s great about Afton is that it’s spacious, so your kiddo has room to roam without feeling hemmed in by crowds. I’ve found that going on a weekday is key—everything just feels calmer.

Pine Tree Apple Orchard (White Bear Lake, MN)

If you’re in the mood for a low-key, charming fall outing, Pine Tree Apple Orchard is the spot. The apple picking is classic, and the wide, quiet paths make it easy to take things at your kiddo’s pace. Plus, you can bring a picnic and make a whole afternoon of it. Again, I’d say weekdays are your friend here.

Pumpkin Patches & Quiet Farms

Dehn’s Pumpkins (Dayton, MN)

I’m all about simplicity when it comes to pumpkin patches, and Dehn's Pumpkins delivers. It’s not a huge commercialized farm, which makes it a lot easier to manage if your kiddo needs some extra space. The hayrides and pumpkin picking are classic fall fun—without the chaos. Trust me, it’s a great option if you’re looking for something more low-key.

Country Sun Farm (Lake Elmo, MN)

If your kiddo is an animal lover but needs a calm environment, Country Sun Farms is perfect. They’ve got a small pumpkin patch, hayrides, and a petting zoo that’s manageable, not overwhelming. Weekdays here are definitely your best bet for a quiet, relaxed experience.

Sensory-Friendly Outdoor Adventures

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum (Chaska, MN)

This place is a hidden gem in the fall. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has gorgeous trails and vibrant fall colors, but it’s the peacefulness that really makes it stand out. The wide-open spaces are perfect for kiddos who need room to breathe, and there’s no pressure to rush through anything. You can take your time, soak it all in, and enjoy the beauty around you. Bring some snacks, let your kiddo lead the way, and it’s a win for everyone.

Tamarack Nature Center (White Bear Township, MN)

Tamarack Nature Center is one of those places where your kiddo can explore on their own terms. The nature trails and open play areas give them the freedom to roam without being overstimulated. If you’re like me and prefer a more relaxed, natural setting, this is a great option for a family day out. Fall leaves, fresh air, and plenty of space to just be—it doesn’t get much better than that.

Calm and Educational Farm Experiences

Gibbs Farm (St. Paul, MN)

For something a little more educational but still laid-back, Gibbs Farm is a great fall option. The farm offers hands-on activities that aren’t too overwhelming, so your kiddo can learn and explore at their own pace. It’s perfect for a day of low-stress learning and fun, without all the noise and crowds.

Fawn-Doe-Rosa Wildlife Educational Park (St. Croix Falls, WI)

A little outside the Twin Cities, but totally worth the trip. Fawn-Doe-Rosa is all about connecting with animals and nature in a calm, sensory-friendly way. The gentle wildlife and quiet trails make it an ideal spot for kids who need a more peaceful experience. If you’ve got an animal lover in your family, this place is a must-visit.

Fall Fun Close to Home

And let’s not forget about the simple joys of fall right at home. Sometimes, a pumpkin carving session in the backyard or a mini scavenger hunt for colorful leaves can be just as fun as a trip to the orchard. These low-pressure, familiar activities are perfect for keeping things stress-free while still enjoying the best of the season.

At the end of the day, fall is all about creating cozy memories with the family. Whether you’re exploring a quiet orchard, taking a nature walk, or just enjoying the crisp air in your own backyard, the key is finding what works for your kiddo’s needs. And hey, every family is different—so take the pressure off and do fall your way.

For us, it’s about finding that balance between enjoying the season and keeping things calm. So grab a pumpkin, take a deep breath of that crisp fall air, and enjoy everything this beautiful season has to offer.
